Was he really good, or really lucky?

His Madrid won 3 Champions Leagues in a row, but can anyone name a single unique playing trait or innovation that his side will be known for in the future?

Were they simply so good by virtue of having the best players in key positions?

Was his skill actually identifying the best way to get the best out of his best players?

And finally, if that really is the simple truth of it, does that not make him absolutely perfect for what we need at United right now, given Jose has failed and IMHO continue to fail to do exactly that??

You don't win 3 champions leagues in a row through luck alone. Even Pep's Barca team, who I would argue were much better, couldn't do it. And United, under the watch of one of the best/most successful managers of all time, only managed two.

If your asking the question "would you have Zidane at United?" My answer would be "see where we are with Jose at Christmas.

With Ronny ageing, Bale hinting he might leave and a large proportion of their squad in their 30's or close to it, I think Zidane realises a rebuilding job is coming up. It's a shame he didnt have the balls/desire to take up that challenge as it would've removed any doubt about his ability.

Correct.

I would be interested to see Zidane, and Pep for that matter, take on a team that is utterly broken and turn it into something very special. You could argue that Pep has done that at City but he hasn’t imho, although I’m sure the resident Div will disagree. Zidane took a team at its absolute peak, with 5-6 world class players in it, already used to winning regularly. He clearly wasn’t up for the challenge of rebuilding it, or perhaps the politics and lack of say on who to buy. It will be interesting to see what he does next, but I’m sure he’ll choose a team that’s there or thereabouts.

How many of these big time Charlies could make a difference at West Brom or Preston North End ?

Point taken but that's not always a good measure of whether someone is a good manager/player/whatever. See: Clough at Lids. There's a ton of reasons why someone can fail at something.

Zidane at United? What other options are on the table? Pochettino?

Depending on next season, as someone said above, I think he's an option.
