We won a game we should win. Some may argue by the skin of our teeth, with Dave saving us again.

At 2-0 it wasn't pretty, but it was functional. We looked to have the game won and looked in a position to improve the goal difference. Like many games we seem to get ourselves into a good position only to just stop playing and lose any control we have on the game. Is it a coincidence it seems to happen when we go defensive? I'd argue it proves attack is the best form of defence.

i think the silence speaks volumes pal

good first half, some quick passing, movement , total control and looked like a true utd side

second half, basically nothing, poor passing, no effort , zero movement and we looked like Burnley .

Watford were shocking and there for the taking, yet tactically second half we seemed content to hold for 2-0 , and Jose will argue "we won, we held on, what's the problem"
but 93rd minuite and DeGae saved us from what would have been another shocking draw.

why does Jose have to try defend a lead, instead of trying to increase it , it makes it awful to watch, boring and stressful and unnecessary and it surely cannot breed confidence, we ended up last night hanging on. and as we have seen before it doesnt always work Confused

Now I'd have no problem with this tactic 'IF' we were any good at it.

I'll admit it's not the way I'd ideally like to see us play but I can live with it. You get a new manager and somethings change, I've lived through Doc, Sexton, Atkinson, SAF, Moyes, VDG & now Jose (at least they are the ones I can remember I think technically there was Busby & O'Farrell as well). They all did it a little bit different, none more boring that Sexton (for the ones that are too young to remember).

I'd take 1-0's and the odd 0-0 away from home at a title rival but we're shit at it. Unless we put 9 behind the ball and make no attempt what so ever to go forward we can't keep a clean sheet. As soon as we show any adventure at all we are fragile and exposed.

i agree - i'm 53 so i've lived through most of those too Wink

what makes it harder for me to take though is exactly what you elude to Zoo,

imho we have better attacking players than we have defenders, and against a side like Watford i'm sure Vermin and City would hammer home that attacking advantage, keep the pedal down, attack as much as possible, keep the opposition in retreat mode and not even offer a glimmer of hope.
we don't , we end up taking off every attacker and we keep throwing defenders on till will have a 9 man defence, then we hoof it away instead of keeping possession and basically hang on, Fellaini man of the match said it all.

that's not a tactical master class by a "special manager" , it's fucking Bolton or Stoke

come the games against Juve-city-chelsea-vermin do we really expect this to be are MO ?
i fucking hope not!!

We must be skint.
Washing the white away kit with the home kit. FFS.

That distraction aside, I thought Fellaini played well. Sanchez was a donkey though. Concentration levels were well below par.

Still...suppose we won. Phew.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/watford-manchester-united-lukaku-gray-smalling-goal-report-latest-a8539601.html :

"Rio Ferdinand gave the game away beforehand. Manchester United, he claimed on BT Sport, were well capable of “coming here and causing an upset”. There it was, in just a few unguarded words: how one of United’s greatest modern players sees their place in the world now. Once, this was a club that would turn up at places like Vicarage Road and swat the opposition away with a swipe of the arm. These days, they arrive with grappling hooks and sandbags."

And here is where United’s safety-first mentality almost cost them: instead of anaesthetising the game, they lost control of it, retreating into their little trench on the 18-yard line, pulling 10 men behind the ball, inviting Watford to attack them. By the law of averages, Watford were going to nail an attack at some point, and with 25 minutes left they finally did, Andre Gray side-footing Doucoure’s intelligent cross high into the net.

United just about held firm, just about did enough. And that’s the sort of vibe you get from United at the moment: a side just about doing enough, a team scraping together just enough points to keep the show on the road for another week, a manager cobbling together just enough supporter goodwill to buttress his position until the next Friday press conference. At full-time, he gestured once more to the travelling fans, who sang his name enthusiastically: it’s the United fans, more than anyone, who are keeping Mourinho in place at the moment, and for now he remains their champion. As long as results go their way, that will continue to be the case. And yet, at the back of their minds, they’ll be bleakly aware of what happens to all underdogs in the end: they fall to earth.

Sad Sad

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor.

In LVG's last season (I think) we won 2-1 at Anfield (Mata's 2 ridiculous goals), beat City 4-2 and then Chelsea 1-0. In between we beat Villa 3-0, which under Van Gaal was a miracle in itself.

4 wins in a row, playing some decent football. We all assumed he'd cracked it.

He hadn't.

We then went to Everton and lost 3-0...

This, sadly, is the benchmark of scepticism I shall now use to judge everything with.

I watched the first half we were great, I didn't see the 2nd half as I had to go out - sounds like I got my logistics just right. Laughing

I'm happy enough with the result and performance, we should have been out of sight in that first half.
