A prime example of what happens when you play cautiously, but don't do it well.

Against the dippers, or any other top 6 team, I'll accept this approach, even if i don't particularly like it. Playing this way against the likes of Huddersfield is criminal.

Anyway, first defeat of the season out the way... back to reality. We are a team fighting for a CL place (if we are lucky), not a league title.

Awful today
Top 4 place has to be the aim.
This is about 4-5 players (2 transfer windows) short of a championship winning side.
Still progress from Moyes and LVG

The performances of Mata (anonymous), Lingard (headless chicken), Mkhitaryan (no confidence) and Herrera (wasteful) are getting progressively worse with each game, and Matic is carrying our midfield.
Fellaini and Pogba can't get back soon enough.

I'd rather see Fosu-Mensa in our defence than Lindelhof.

Couldn't agree more. The four you mentioned have been anonymous in recent weeks. I think Martial could also be added to that list, although his start to the season gives him some grace. That's half our squad below par.

Lindelhof has done little to convince me he'll be any better than smalling, far from it in fact. I know he's young and don't want to be to harsh on the lad, but you can usually see something to cling on to.

Pogba and Fellaini (YES, FELLAINI) cannot return soon enough. For me the big lump is now a vital squad player in my book.

Knowing we'll park the bus in the next 2 games (spurs and rent boys), that'll be 4 games without a win. We've come back down to earth with an horrible bump...

It became apparent to me on Wednesday against Benfica, and again today that Mkhitaryan seems to have no understanding whatsoever of the offside rule.

Not so much cautious as complacent. But it has been coming. The last two matches have been the same. There has been a total lack of desire. It can in part be explained by absentees and the way the fixture list has fallen with so many away matches but they are playing like strangers at times. There is a depressing atmosphere around the team at the moment and Jose's increasing surliness can't be helping. The party is over for the moment. These patches do happen so next week may be a watershed.

Having said that I just saw Jose's press conference and I think he was right to blame the team's attitude in the first half. Let's hope for a reaction against Spurs.

Not fighting for the title?? Are you serious?

What kind of a squad do you expect us to have to fight for the title? Because our current one is miles stronger than actual previous league winning ones. I don't want to hear 'Fergie was in a different class so could win leagues with poorer teams' as an excuse for Jose. Jose can and should be challenging for the title.

Regardless of our shite PL finish the last few seasons, the money we have spent and the quality in depth of the squad, the league title challenge is a must.

I hate it when we play cautiously away to teams like Huddersfield. Why do we do it? Are the players that intimidated by the fans who build up the fixture as a cup final? It doesn't make sense.

If we are being fair & pragmatic then:-

An away game after a Euro away game is usually shite for us (even when we were great)
We have the spine of the team missing (Bailly, Jones, Pogba, Fellaini)
Due to injuries we’ve not had rotation, so same players expected to be great every game
Some of our better players are tired, out of form, or both

This however is a good squad, could be a great one. With everyone fit then it has strength, speed, balance and power enough to win the league. That’s our first loss for a long, long time. Suck it up, it’s not the end of the world, nor the end of the optimism we should have.

Never said we shouldn't be challenging. The money we've spent, of course we should. I'm just less convinced we will.

I'll be honest - I'm a little relieved. Our performances and, seemingly, mindset has been going downhill for a while (not to mention a few crucial injuries).

I think this defeat will fire us up and at a crucial time too - Spurs aren't the joke they were ten years ago.

I'll take a defeat to Hudderscuntingfield if that's what it takes to get us back on track.

We do indeed have to remember that even in the best days results like this were not unknown particularly early season when we were battling on several fronts. SAF always said stay in touch until Christmas and then the real business starts.

The concern is the away form. This was on the cards. It could have happened at Stoke and I don't think we've really got back on track since that derailment. It could have happened last week too if they had had the courage to go for it. We were lucky against Soton. We have been sound enough away in Europe but at the cost of self-expression.

Other teams will get injuries too so, if we stay in touch until we get over ours, we will see then but there does seem a lack of creativity without the usual suspects around. That shouldn't happen with the likes of Rashford, Martial, Mata, Herrera and Mkhi on the pitch. Not at least against the Huddersfields.

There's still a disconnect and it's causing a crisis of confidence. I'm pretty basic as far as football goes. Systems to me are no substitute for players and the first thing I look at is whether the team has an old-fashioned 1 - 11. We definitely lack a 7 but we have a few 10's. I think there are a couple of other square pegs there too. It's not bad. They are pretty good pegs but they don't always perform perfectly in their assigned role.
