So... what the fuck happened there?

I watched the whole game, but in a pub, with lots of boozy pre-Christmas conversation going around.

IMO we always looked second best, but considering the team we had out the result is unacceptable. It happens in the cups, but the fact the league is almost dead now is more scathing on our approach to that result.

They just wanted it more, which is the most damning thing.

Thoughts? Anyone paying more attention than me?

I watched at home & you're fairly spot on imo.

Thought they played some tidy football & looked a threat throughout. Team we had out had more than enough to win that game.

Honestly, it looks like we've collapsed this season.

We play dire football, sign players who clearly aren't at this level &/ or don't want to play for us, we have a manager who looks as though he couldn't give two shits about our performances/ results and we are winning fuck all this season.

We're out the title race at the beginning of December, out the League cup to a (very good) championship side (but a championship side none the less), & if you think we're anywhere near the level needed to win a European Cup you're delusional. Nothing more to add to that one, you're simply delusional.

Our only hope of a trophy (before fucking Christmas!) is the FA Cup & I can't see this side getting motivated in that competition.

We all knew when Jose came that he wouldn't be a long term solution, his record elsewhere dictates this, but it's beginning to look as though this will be his last season with us. It wouldn't surprise me if he walks at the end of this season.

We've got Leicester away & I have absolutely no belief that we will get anything from that game.

I don't think it's that bad, but I think the fans will start to turn en masse if we don't start showing some more fight and passion in our performances this season. We're sitting pretty in 2nd - better than I thought we'd be doing - but our players look jaded, neither our striker nor manager celebrate scoring goals anymore, and I can't see how we're gonna keep up morale through a long run of league games if City keep winning.

The fact we play boring negative football too is the most concerning thing IMO.

Well, I'm at a fucking loss as to what's going on...

Romero gave me the jitters every time he went near the ball, Pogba seemed to have a chip on his shoulder and could have seen another red card, McTominay was isolated and over-run, Rashford, Martial and Ibrahimovic seemed to be playing seperate games!

Lukaku came on and to be fair, showed some semblance of urgency.
Mkhitaryan comes on and looks terrified of the ball.

Apart from that, Bristol were actually, very good.

Second best all over the pitch Dave.

Their left full has got himself a move to a Premier League club tonight I reckon.

Darmian however... I try to avoid knee jerk reactions right after we get beat but dearie me he was fuckin awful tonight. I think I’d prefer to see Tuanzebe at right back when Valencia isn’t available

We're sitting pretty in second for the time being mate.

What's worse is that we can smash dire teams all day long but as soon as a team with any kind of substance comes up against us we fold or we scrape past them.
It's not as bad as previous managers but it doesn't look like we're going anywhere fast.

& yes, the fact that 80-90% of the football we play is dire concerns me too.

I hope i'm wrong but we look out of our depth against the big teams and we look scared against the mid table sides.

A re-occuring theme is that we are second to every ball and lose most of the 50-50 duels. This is not what I expect of a Jose team. It's time the players started taking responsibility, and I don't mean by taking to social media to tell us they know we need to improve, but by doing it on the pitch.

All this talk of dire football, it's not been that bad, it's just city's football is making everyone else look worse. Peps teams seem to have a psyological edge, where even the best players freeze in fear against them. No other team have played with any real quality on a consistent basis. I think a huge problem we have is confidence. We have none. We are second in the league and we are still battered in the press, mocked by ABU's and even our own supporters are having a pop. It doesn't matter how good you are, without confidence and belief you will never play exciting football.

sadly it's no surprise at all to me, i've said for months now how overall poor we are . were better than probably 16 other premier league sides but thats about it. we have no style or tactic that makes us look like a good side, we don't have wingers, we don't seem to have recognized wing backs , we use Young and Valencia to good effect, but Pep realised at City you win fuck all with 2 aged full backs , yet our most productive 2 have a combined age of over 60 !!!!
we simply play, sometimes well and the quality of our squad is more often than not good enough and we just simply win ...

you can look at the glass half full and say " we are better than we were " but to me that's papering over the cracks.

being better than we were is something Sam Allardyce could probably have achieved given £280 million to spend.

i feel Jose is not fully to blame, i believe he is as bemused as the fans sometimes, this costly assembled squad of superstars started the season looking like it had just clicked, Matic looked like the missing piece but sometimes it looks like a side of individuals who don't work to create or think ahead of the next pass.
the only exception on many occasions is Lingaard who sees 3 passes ahead.

we don't need to slaughter individuals or the manager, He has won the champions league before with weaker squads than any one else at Porto and Inter.....maybe he could do it here ?

i'm not holding my breath.

Too many bang average players in that starting XI, Darmian and Blind are just nowhere near the level we need. Blind's lack of pace is astonishing, but in fairness neither have had many games. Rojo is easing his way back, he needs games, needs time, but he's off the pace too. Romero was shaky last night, particularly with the ball at his feet, but he couldn't do much for either goal. Too many passengers last night and we didn't have much luck. Shaw didn't seem to get into the game, his positioning for their winner was shocking, as was his clearance.

I agree that our forwards need to start playing better together. Rashford needs to play Lukaku in more often, there was a square ball last night for a tap in and he got ball greedy and didn't realise it.

I'm always not overly arsed about the League Cup, its nice to win it, but if we get knocked out then it's never the end of the world.

I think we'll see at least a couple leave in January. Blind and Darmian are simply not good enough, but both will be excellent in Spain and Italy respectively.

Well done Bristol City anyway.

We weren't the league's best team when we were smashing dross in September and we aren't the league's worst after losing to City. Our form can pick up.

opinions eh.. funny things ???>>???
i thought Blind was our best player last night till he went off, he made a tackle that saved a certain goal and overall he looked to be competing well ,Rashford reminded me of Keiren Richardson , he just looked arrogant like it was beneath him to have play against these poorer players, and he was greedy too often. Pogba wasnt far off either , lots of drag backs and running the ball into a crowd thinking he could beat them all, and i lost count how many times Martial or Rashford ended up on the floor for no reason claiming a free kick.
it's a mickey mouse cup anyway.
we're the new Arsenal and fourth is all ways the top prize Very Happy Very Happy Wink

I've got an idea - bring back Scholesy - no one seems to have the guile to make unmissible chances.
This was particularly evident against City but was a feature of this game too.
Think we should buy Ozil if he becomes available, he can pass accurately, something which was sadly lacking against Bristol - I lost count of how many balls were intercepted.
I've been watching the cricket but that's as boring as batshit too.
