Observations from a neutral perspective:

1. Decent start by England - not fantastic but not rubbish like the last 3 World Cups
2. Should have been out of sight by half time - Lingard needs to calm down and remember how to shoot.
3. Tunisia are a cheating, niggly awkward bunch and no mugs at this level.
4. Might as well scrap VAR if they can't pick up strikers being taken out by blatant rugby tackles. Was the Brazilian VAR official in the bogs doing lines of coke or something?
5. Raheem Sterling - fuck me, what is the point of the little shit? England would have been better playing with 10 men that have that fucking oxygen thief stinking the place out.
6. Rashford and Loftus-Cheek looked much more purposeful than Dele Alli and Sterlingshit - need to see them given more game time.
7. Three points more than Germany, two more than Brazil or Argentina. Early days but those teams would trade places right now.

Thought England played as well as you can against a team that plays like that.

It was a great start. But the minute decisions started to go against them the confidence understandably dropped. They done well go keep going, given the conditions, and to nick it at the end was everything they deserved.

Sterling... one of the most over rated players in the world IMO. People point the the amount of goals he scores. When you play in that city team you will score goals. The chances they make for him is incredible. But he misses a huge portion of them. Just cast your mind back to our derby win, he could've had 3 or 4 if I recall.

I didn't need any convincing this version of VAR wouldn't work. Last night's attempt to use it was pathetic. Having all those refs, with all those screens to watch replays on, how can you miss the rugby tackles on Kane? Especially when you give a penalty for a player running into the back of a defender. When the refs have all this tech to referee the game and still get it wrong it just looks like bias. Perhaps the Kremlin are involved? Wink

I expected more from England. I didn't think they looked any different from previous tournaments. Just different names. The ref gave them absolutely nothing though and the penalty decision was dreadful imo.

Why did he wait so long to drag Sterling off? He was absolutely shite.

England should have been 5 up by half-time with Lingard getting a hat-trick. It was going very well until they got their penalty, it livened them up but seemed to impact the pace of our forwards, basically they stopped doing what we had been doing so well and stopped playing with tempo - it was like a United performance!

Kane will get all the plaudits today, but other than popping up for 2 goals I thought the game passed him by to an extent.

Sterling, I really don't understand why anyone would put him up front, he's simply not a striker and he couldn't hit the side of a cow's arse with a banjo. Hopefully we'll see more of Rashford, as his physicality and goal threat is far superior to Sterling's. Sterling links the play better when sitting deeper, but as a striker, no thanks.

The officiating was a joke, two clear tackles that owed more to American Football than the beautiful game, plus a really soft one against us. The WC in Russia and Qatar were both awarded based on hugely corrupt people, I'm not quite calling the decisions we didn't get an act of corruption but it will be interesting to see if we get a better set of decisions in the next game.

PS. VAR equals penalties, no wonder Smalling didn't get selected as he'd have at least three against him in each game.

Pretty boring really but a very good ending. I don't think you can ask much more of Kane than to win what should have been two pens and poach two goals! That's a little unfair.

VAR has been utterly shown up and we now have someone in the stand making the see nowt, hear nowt, say nowt decisions when it suits them. I agree it makes it look like institutional bias.

The defence was poor, I felt. The wing backs were okay without being overly effective but the centre-backs were at times like the three stooges. Pickford doesn't really fill me with confidence either.

Henderson was okay too but if that's the creative midfield, well....

If I have a criticism of Southgate it is that he has his favourites too. Pickford, Stones, Dele, Kane, Sterling. Pretty well undroppable. Kane is the only one you can say justifies that. Yesterday was crying out for a change up front from about 55.

Quarters I reckon. If results really go our way we might limp into the semis.

Looked sharp for the first 10 minutes then ran out of ideas. Three centre backs against a team without an out-and-out centre forward.
Plenty of possession for long periods of the game without really threatening, then spunked an injury time winner when Tunisia turned off thinking they'd got the draw.

How the fuck anyone can get exited by that dross is beyond me.

Imagine if that had been United?

Was on a flight during the game but glad to hear we managed to nick the winner. I don't expect much out of this team at all but I reckon that goal will be the difference between making it to the knockouts and going out in the group.

The way the draw is set up we'd meet either Brazil or Germany in the 1/4's so we won't get any further than that.

I thought for the first 20 mins England did pretty well, then as Tunisia retreated into their 18 yard box things became more difficult for them.

Walker was waving his elbow about and not looking at the player or the direction of the ball so it was a justified pen, outside of that they rarely threatened the England 18 yard box.

The second half was a bit drab, England had the ball, they didn't, they sat 9 men in their box, England couldn't break them down. It was clear after 50 minutes that Sterling & Ali needed to come off not sure why Southgate waited so long.

Thought Loftus-Cheek did well when he came on, Rashford was OK but what can you really do in just 20 minutes? Importantly they kept their heads, which previous England teams haven't done. They kept at it and the last 10 minutes always looked likely to score.

The real point of interest for me was that in the previous 13 games over 5 days the officials had been largely pretty good and outside of a few complaints about it being slow and clunky VAR had pointed out some fouls/pen's that had been missed, so the real question is why was it so different for England? The one all the clips are showing is a blatant red card and penalty, no attempt made to play the ball it's a rugby tackle, disgraceful. There were a couple of others as well so why did England miss out, none of the officials on the pitch saw it, the 4th official didn't spot it and the VAR didn't see anything wrong with it, how can that be? at 2-1 down with only 10 men Tunisia would not have been able to sit back the way they did and with the space England found in the first 20 minutes that game could easily have finished 5 or 6 - 1. Goal difference may be key to who wins and England have been robbed.

All in all for a young and inexperienced squad it was OK for the 1st game, they'll grow into the tournament and will do OK when they get beaten by Germany or Brazil in the quarters.
