Pretty clear I think that he wants them to play a system which is only changed when hegemony has been attained. He is a Pompey rather than a Caesar, a Monty rather than a Rommel. To them numerical superiority was always to be achieved before the counter-attack could be unleashed so they followed a policy of initial containment.

I agree we are more used to the opposite but SAF learned the need for caution in Europe, hence Stam and Ronnie Johnsen. This is why Jose probably will strengthen the defence again whatever I and people like me might think about adequacy. The defence is not good enough to win in Europe unless 2 or 3 players step up but it is good enough imho for the EPL.

Agreed. With some good coaching, it is good enough to at least challenge for the league.

I think we forget Jose has signed 2 CB's, but chose to stick with Jones and Smalling. He also isolated Blind who, although slow, was a good defender and could have also done a job with Matic screening the defence.

Last night I thought lindelhof and Bailiey looked pretty good. Bailiey can be a bit of a mistake in him, granted, but he attacks the ball. He breaks ranks to try and kill danger early. And Lindlehof, he looks calm and comfortable on the ball, and with a season to adapt should be given his chance.

Compare them to the alternative. Jones and Smalling.... within minutes of coming on Smalling is trying to climb into the attackers shirt. Jones, although better along side others (recall him being pretty good with Rojo and Bailiey?) with Smalling he just looks panicked.

We do not need work on our back four. At the very least, Jose should not be so obsessed with creating the perfect back four, when we conceded just one more goal than Ciddy last season.

We scored 38 less than Ciddy. That is where the problem lies. A fairly obvious problem is Ciddy andScouse have evolved and are scoring for fun.

I think you are missing the point. We only conceded so few because we had a back 7 and we scored so few because we had a back 7. You can't be scoring 100 goals when you're parking the bus.

Jose doesn't trust the defence, so the skilful flair players are shackled by being dragged in narrow and deep. Seriously look at Pogba for France and compare him to Pogba for us. The lad is too deep helping out the wobbly back four and the runners he should have out wide are too narrow and too deep helping out our two 33 year old full backs who's legs have gone.

It's not about getting a perfect back four, it's about getting one that you can trust. You can't trust Jones, the lad is one more season away from having his own fucking sit com! You can't trust Smalling, his pace has gone and so his first option EVERY time is to grab hold of his man. Darmian is the first Italian defender I've ever seen that actually can't defend.

If you don't believe that we need help with the back four / defence in general then I'd ask the obvious question, why have we signed a defensively minded midfielder and a full back already and the only players we are linked with, with just 3 days left of this window are all centre halves? The manager seems to agree with me.

Incidentally, top bit of scouting and recruitment, we're chasing a couple of defenders that will be 30 before the season finishes both priced at over £50m, both had issues with serious injuries meanwhile Barca' just quietly got on with signing 23 year old Lenglet for £30m! Fucking farcical!

I can't help but agree that the age restrictions on transfers have gone out of the window in recent years. I can see good reason for the odd relaxation (e.g SAF with RVP and the odd short cameo from the likes of Blanc or Larson) but generally it must be a good policy. It can be set slightly higher nowadays. Generally, players, particularly defenders, should look to play at the top level to at least 35 with the help of sports science, diet and relaxation and stretching disciplines. Discipline is important because a player needs to understand himself how his game must evolve.

We were linked with Lenglet. We have to accept as with Ronnie that for Southern Europeans and South Americans the lure of Real and Barca is sometimes too great. With Germans it's Bayern first unless you get a German manager when you may get the players Bayern feels it can let go. Pep and PSG deserve a paragraph of their own so I won't go there.

The other thing is how much of this linking do we really accept? I now believe nothing until it's a done deal. In fact I no longer read any of it. It goes in one ear and out the other.

after the direction Mourinho has taken us in the last 8 months , i shouldn't be surprised at the lack of enthusiasm most reds i know are feeling for the new season, but even by Jose standards this looks like a fucking train wreck unfolding before our eyes ..

That piece couldn’t have been primed any more by the CEO had he written it himself. It’s almost Trumpesque in its flattery of the CEOs performance. Either that or he’s setting out a case for his defence. Will be interesting to see how Jose’s media friends respond.

If the board / owners had any bollocks they’d sack them both.

The club is now worth £3.1 billion, on transfer deadline day we announced a new App, we signed more commercial partner deals in the off season that new players.

Woodward is doing the business side right, the club needs a sporting director, a head of recruitment and an academy director, these three positions NEED to mould and shape the future of the club on the football side.

Leave Ed to what he's good at, doing deals to find a new S E Asian off road agricultural vehicle partner.
