Moses' Villa Match Report

Boxing Day, 2000

by Moses

Living in Brum as i do,people often say to me you must really hate Villa or this must be your favourite away, well no i don't and no it isn't .They are and never will be our rivals on or off the pitch, but seeing them get all giddy when we are ever mentioned always brings a smile to my face.

Anyway i was looking forward to this game as i am a great believer in the traditional festive fixtures, and so arrangements were made, briefs sorted, and alarm clock set.

Our party consisted of the Judge, Jonah, Windy, the Wolf and my good self. However whenever Jonah is involved things rarely go to plan. He was at his in-laws in Warwick and decided it would be a good idea if i picked him up from junction 3 of the M42 at 9.00am. It was a good idea if he had turned up on time, but he didn't so we got back to our house at about 9.45.By this time the others had arrived from Manc, and we were greeted by the sight of 3 lads feet up infront of the telly in my living room, being fed and watered by the lovely wife, looking like they didn't have a care in the world. Now as i wasn't driving i had prepared some mulled wine to get us going, and this was dispatched greedily before setting off to the Sedgemere club in Yardley which was opening early to accommodate us thirsty lot. We arrived eventually after a couple of diversions the funniest being when Wolf drove Windys car into a hedge and spent the rest of the day apologising to our childish delight. We had a few beers, others arrived most notably LR in his VW camper, dodgy motor if ever i have seen one, and after a few scares ie Judge fucking up the travel arrangements, we set off for V.Park. Jonah said farewell as he had a lift back home after the match, and the rest of us made plans to meet up afterwards.

I took up my place on row 1 to the very right of our support, and soon made contact with Windy, Wolf and Paz who were in their end just to our right, i say made contact, Windy rang me and proceeded to wave his arms about and act a complete buffoon to grab my attention, it worked and to my knowledge didn't drop any of his vast supply of pies !

We started brightly and OGS should have scored early on but put his shot just past the post, we proceeded to out play our hosts, without scoring and went in at HT level.

Second half saw Villa play with more guts, and created some good chances, and had the nerve to score through Dublin only to be adjudged to be offside, although it was very close. Barthez made a great save from De Bilde and we were still going close at the other end, most notably Scholes who should have scored. The atmosphere to my mind was pretty bad, if they think OT is quiet, god help Villa in what WAS there cup final. We weren't that good either and should have been better, but just as we were resigning ourselves to a point, up pops OGS with his head after a great move and cross from Beckham to score the winner. Fucking top. Arsenal had beaten Leicester earlier 6-1,so it was great to win, and must have deflated them, even better.

We left the ground only for Judge to inform me he had fucked up again, and we had no lift back to the Sedgemere. The others had gone back with LR, and we managed to get a Joe after some wait. We arrived back last, had a couple of quick ones before we left as Windy had to get back, a pastry convention or something if i remember, and discussed the days events as you do, with the concensus being we all love being reds. Cheers and happy new year to you all.
